BOTOX, made from a purified substance derived from the bacteria clostridium botulinum, is one of the most popular medically-administered cosmetic in the United States and abroad. It is injected into the face to eliminate lines around the eyes, on the forehead, and between the eyebrows. Unlike a “filler,” BOTOX does not plump up facial lines. Instead, it temporarily paralyzes muscle movement, preventing patients from making crow’s feet and frown lines. Repeated muscle contractions over the years are what creates these unwanted creases and wrinkles.
BOTOX injections take only minutes to perform and patients experience no downtime. The needles used to inject the BOTOX are quite thin, which means most patients do not have a problem with pain. Many patients say the injections feel like a pinch. Patients who are sensitive or afraid of needles, however, can have a topical anesthetic numbing cream applied to the treatment area 30 minutes ahead of time. Some patients experience minor bruising or swelling after the procedure. The results of BOTOX usually appear within 24 to 48 hours, but the full effect can take up to 2 weeks. At this point, touch ups can be done. It’s better to start with less. Benefits of Botox typically last up to four months.
Avoid taking Aspirin and Advil for a couple of days prior to treatment. These drugs can increase bleeding. Also, refrain from taking fish oil, which can increase bruising.
When BOTOX is administered by a licensed professional the results will be natural. Often people get concerned because they are under the assumption that BOTOX will make them look unnaturally frozen or like a mannequin. This is not the case as long as you receive professional treatment and do not receive excess treatments.
